Sunnyvale, California – February 25, 2009—RGB Networks, the leader in network video processing, today announced that its Simulcast Edge Processor (SEP) now supports the decoding of SCTE-27-based subtitling for broadcast video programming, which enables cable operators to localize their programming by displaying subtitles in any languages available in the programming.

The SEP takes advantage of the growing trend for programmers worldwide to encode their programming content with multiple subtitle tracks in order to reach more viewers. These subtitles are typically in several languages, but are not visible to viewers. Cable operators receive this programming at their central headends and select which subtitle track to display based on local demographics, thus delivering a more personalized viewing experience.

This capability is particularly useful for operators serving a multicultural subscriber base in which multiple languages are spoken. Operators can use the SEP with its new capability to meet local demographic needs, such as delivering an American program to one Brazilian neighborhood with Portuguese subtitles, while the same program is seen in another neighborhood with Spanish subtitles, and yet another neighborhood receives Italian subtitles.

SCTE-27-based subtitles are based on a bitmap technique that enables support for subtitling in any language. The subtitle author is given complete control over the appearance of the characters.
